Education
I believe that a well-educated public is essential to the health of our democracy, and that we have an obligation to provide high quality free public education for all students through the 12th grade. I believe that public education should include not only the basic subjects of reading, math, and science, but also opportunities for students to become well-rounded in the arts and social sciences. I oppose federally subsidized school vouchers. I also oppose unfunded federal mandates such as the so-called "No Child Left Behind" Act. I also believe that affordable public higher education should be made available to all qualified students. I support "affirmative action" in the sense of taking obstacles that students have overcome into consideration in college admission criteria, but I believe that providing an opportunity for one student need not come at the cost of denying an opportunity for another.
